If I flush the toilet the drama begins. While the toilet is flushing, if I lift the lift of the lid of the tank cover NOT THE SEAT, water shoots up straight in the air from the top/cap of the fill valve.

The fill valve column will have to removed from the top of the tank after you unscrew the nut under the bottom of the tank. Just be sure to turn off the water first. There should be a hand knob in the plumbing pipe that is between the wall and the bottom
